FACULTY START-UP PROGRAM IN MATERIALS AT XAVIER UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA

Abstract

As a part of its new research initiative, Xavier University of Louisiana is hiring two faculty in the Department of Physics & the Dual-Degree Engineering Program. The new hires are strategically selected in the areas of Materials Science and Engineering to complement the efforts already under way at the University. The goal of this proposal is to request start-up funding for two new tenure-track faculty in the Department of Physics & the Dual-Degree Engineering Program starting in August 2016. The new hires will join a solid group of material scientists at Xavier University. In the past decade, Xavier has developed and strengthened its research capacity in the area of materials research. In 2010, Xavier received the NSF EPSCoR Research Infrastructure Improvement (RII) funding for its research and collaborations in the area of computational materials research. A total of $1.2 million was awarded over 5 years to Xavier to significantly strengthen the materials research program by providing research funding to several Chemistry faculty members, as well as summer research experiences for undergraduates. Also in 2010, Xavier received a $3 million five-year NSF Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (PREM) grant with the New York University Materials Research Science and Engineering Center. This partnership builds on existing linkages between the two universities, while significantly strengthening the materials research and education program at Xavier. The program has created collaborative research groups and has provided funding for new equipment in the areas of nanoscale imaging systems, including research on energy, magnetic assemblies, imaging force measurements, and polymorphic materials, all areas of relevance to the mission of the Department of Defense. The startup funding requested through this opportunity will provide two new faculty members with summer salary, funding support for student researchers, as well as equipment and travel funds, in the hopefully brief period before they are able to secure active external research grants. Offering start-up funds to new faculty and pairing them with seasoned faculty members for proper mentoring will enable them to develop their research expertise and successfully progress towards tenure and promotion.
