2015 Science of Adhesion Gordon Research Conference and Seminar
Abstract
2015 Gordon Research Conference and Symposium on the Science of Adhesion The Gordon Research Conference on the Science of Adhesion brings together a community with expertize and interests in interfacial and surface phenomena, with an emphasis on interfacial structure, chemistry, and mechanical properties. This GRC has been continually replenished by a combination of maintaining itself as the primary home for advances in the fundamental science of adhesion, and actively making connections to new areas of science where surface and interfacial phenomena, primarily adhesion but including friction and contact compliance, are a core concern. The 2015 GRC/GRS on the Science of Adhesion will focus on two (related) areas of strong current and future interest: adhesion and surface properties of soft/compliant materials, and application of adhesion science to scientific problems in biomaterials ranging in scale from individual molecules to tissues. Over the last decade, soft materials and biological adhesion problems have become a regular and growing part of the Adhesion Science community. Through his involvement in the Adhesion Society, the PI has in the past organized several sessions at its Annual Meeting over the last few years, including ones on single-molecule force spectroscopy, adhesion mechanics in biomimetic materials, and adhesion mechanics in cells and tissues. This GRC/GRS represents an opportunity to promote rejuvenation and growth of the adhesion science community by cementing further collaboration with biology & bioengineering and the science of soft materials. Specifically, the goals of the conference are to a. Bring together a diverse set of speakers representing cutting-edge science on adhesion and related topics with a focus on soft/compliant materials and biomaterials. b. Catalyze research connections between analytical, experimental, and computational methods of adhesion science and pressing problems in soft materials and biomaterials. c. Increase the representation among speakers, discussion leaders, and attendees of underrepresented groups. d. Encourage the active participation of junior attendees (graduate students and postdoctoral associates) by organizing an associated Gordon Research Seminar.
