R/V Oceanus Cruise Oregon State University
Abstract
The National Science Foundation-owed research vessel Oceanus has been successfully operated by Oregon State University (OSU) since 2012. The vessel has been operated throughout the Pacific Basin in support of a wide variety of science research projects sponsored by the NSF and the U.S. Navy. Oceanus was chosen for much of this worl due to the vessel s operational versatility and economic efficiency combined with it ability to work both close to shore and transit great distances. In an era of tightening budgets and constrained resources, these characteristics have proven valuable to the broader UNOLS sea going research community by providing a platform from which to complete missions previously reserved for larger vessels that require significantly more budget to operate.2015 will mark the forth year that OSU will operate Oceanus in the Pacific Region. Though tradeoffs were made with the retirement of Wecoma, OSU will continue to build on the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution s long history of productive operations using Oceanus. WIth 215 planned operating days that span 10 months, Oceanus is nearly operating within her ideal capacity range of 220-230 days as established by UNOLS. As the Cascadia work has matured, better understanding of required contingency has been applied to project scheduling. The 2015 schedule also includes work scheduled to take place in the Gulf of California (Seibel, 21 days). This cruise involves a foreign clearance and will be scheduled between other complicated cruises that should take place off the coast of California. We anticipate 2015 being a very challenging year for the vessel. The Oceanus has two ONR cruises totaling 13 days scheduled with Joe Calatoni as the lead PI. The first trip will mobilize in San Diego on June 10 and arrive back on June 15th. The second trip will mobilize on August 1st and demobilize August 7th.
