TRI Tinnitus Symposium - Tinnitus: From Cochlea to Brain and Back

Abstract

Abstract Subjective tinnitus, a phantom ringing or buzzing sensation, is a major hearing health care problem for military personnel, many of whom develop this debilitating hearing problem due to high intensity noise exposure produced by aircraft, ships, weapon systems and enemy explosive devices. The Veterans Administration health care costs associated with tinnitus was a staggering $1 million in 2010. The first step towards developing effective treatments for this problem is a clear understanding of the neurophysiological and biological mechanisms that give rise to tinnitus. During the past couple of decades, neuroscientists have made enormous progress in understanding tinnitus. To synthesize and widely disseminate this information, we will host a three day conference on the mechanisms of tinnitus from the cochlea, to the brain and back to the cochlea. The goal of this international symposium is to bring together the world’s leading scientists to present and discuss the latest scientific findings on the underlying neural mechanisms that give rise to the phantom sound of tinnitus in humans and animal models. The symposium will consist of a series of national and international keynote speakers who will address crucially important aspects of tinnitus. There will also be short talks from submitted abstracts and poster sessions to introduce exciting new research findings from new investigators. There will be a special discussion panel consisting of world experts on tinnitus to synthesize and critically review what is currently known about the neural bases of tinnitus and to highlight promising new areas of research. To maximize the impact of the conference and accomplish these goals, we are requesting funds to partially cover the travel expenses and accommodations for 22 invited speakers and discussants who are world-recognized experts in tinnitus and related mechanisms.
