Sonobuoy-Based, 3-D Acoustic Characterization of Shallow-Water Environments

Abstract

The PI will perform research to continue the development of a technique for characterizing the 3-D acoustic properties of a shallow-water waveguide using CW and impulsive sound sources and a planar array of 25-30 GPS-capable sonobuoy receivers. The proposed work will involve theoretical development, numerical simulations, and participation in the ONR 2016 Seabed Characterization Experiment in the New England Mud Patch. The experimental configuration consists of a moored, drifting, or towed source radiating one or more pure tones to a field of several freely drifting buoys, each containing a hydrophone, GPS navigation, and radio telemetry.
