Schlieren imaging of battery failures
Abstract
Dr. Michael Hargather at New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (NMIMT, New Mexico Tech) will perform the setup for and testing of lithium-ion batteries under over-voltage failures. The testing will include schlieren visualization and high-speed imaging of the failures. The schlieren imaging will reveal gas venting and motion during failure, in addition to the presence and propagation of a shock wave if formed. Experiments will be performed on a range of batteries that have been identified by the sponsor and will be provided by the sponsor. The schlieren imaging will allow measurement of shock wave propagation to determine an explosive equivalent weight or a TNT equivalence for the battery failure. Pressure measurements will be made throughout the battery failure tests to determine shock wave impulse and pressure build-up in the test chamber which will yield the total volume of gas released from the battery failure.
