ONR SHIPTIME and TECHNICAL SUPPORT SERVICES

Abstract

In 2015 the University of Miami’s research vessel F.G. WALTON SMITH will operate in support of scientific research at sea for 122 days. The NSF has funded 20 of the days with 2 days pending, NOAA has funded 65 days, NAVY has funded 13 days and a private firm has funded 22 days for a current total of 122 days. There has also been no NSF or NOAA days carried forward from 2014 to 2015 keeping the total at 122 days. The 2015 year has a total of 19 cruises scheduled of which 18 are funded and 1 are pending. In 2015 NSF has sponsored these projects aboard the F.G. Walton Smith: 1. Dr. Dennis Hansell continues the University of Miami’s consensus reference material (CRM) program that was first developed in 1999 in support of consistent, high-quality measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in seawater by the international ocean chemistry community. 2. Dr. Larry Brand will collect water samples in the Gulf Stream 20 km off of Miami for the project “The Spectrum of Abilities to Use Marine Colloidal and Particulate Iron by Various Phytoplankton Species.” 3. Dr. Robert Cowen will use a combination of towed imaging system (ISIIS) and MOCNESS nets to sample the fine-scale to sub-mesoscale plankton field to evaluate larval fish patchiness in response to physical and predator/prey interactions.
