Development of Low Fouling and High Fouling-release Zwitterionic Marine Coatings

Abstract

The objective of this work is to develop environmentally benign marine coatings with low initial fouling attachment and high fouling-release under low ship speeds by combining the advantages of both non-fouling zwitterionic materials and fouling-release PDMS materials. This work is designed in such a way that these coatings will meet four criteria for practical applications: low cost, high efficiency, scalability for large-scale production and environmental friendliness. There are three specific tasks: to (a) synthesize a larger scale of zwitterionic-based polymers; (b) optimize coating formulations; (c) evaluate these coatings in field tests.
