Public Service Provision as Peace-building: How do Autonomous Efforts Compare to Internationally Aided Interventions
Abstract
We propose three inter-related expanded data processing and data collection efforts. First, we will expand the processing of the qualitative interview data we are collecting and construct a shareable qualitative database. Second, we will conduct a systematic review of the available existing data on each dimension of the three main variables in our study. From this review, we will construct a multi-level database that includes both quantitative and qualitative measures at the national, subnational and sectoral levels for each of our original country-cases. We also propose to add the Rwandan case to this research effort. Third, we will construct a database of available quantitative indicators at the national level for the universe of peacebuilding cases cross-nationally and will employ regression analysis to test the hypotheses we are developing in the existing effort. Each of these efforts will facilitate the analysis we originally proposed, will not require human subjects review, and can be implemented in short order. To facilitate these efforts, we propose to create a formal role for students in our research project. We will design and implement an undergraduate summer research fellows program at Santa Clara University (SCU) to support the data collection and processing efforts described in more detail below. Finally, we propose to convene a workshop at SCU to receive formal feedback from noted scholars on the preliminary findings of our research and to increase the visibility of our research program.
