Measuring Turbulence Mixing in Indonesian Seas using Microstructure EM-APEX Floats

Abstract

We propose an observational experiment in fall?winter 2015 to measure turbulence mixing in Indonesian waters using microstructure EM-APEX floats on Indonesian RVs. This is regarded as a pilot experiment to ONR’s PISTON DRI and the Years of Maritime Continent field campaign and is a crucial collaborative effort with Indonesian oceanographers Dr. Indra Jaya and Dr. Agus Atmadipoera at Bogor Agricultural University. The potential experiment sites include Banda Sea, Flores Sea, and south of Makassar Strait, where we expect vigorous diapycnal mixing activity. Microstructure EM-APEX floats measure turbulent thermal diffusion rate, turbulence kinetic energy dissipation rate, eddy diffusivity, horizontal velocity, temperature and salinity, vertical shear, stratification, and thereby the Richardson number. We will quantify turbulence mixing and small-scale internal waves in the energetic Indonesian waters and investigate the turbulence parameterization.
