Accomplishments of Naturalistic Decision Making Research and Applications to Emerging Defense Challenges
Abstract
This Working Meeting will result in a State-of-the-Art Report on Research and Theory in "Naturalistic Decision Making," with respect to contributions to and prospects for military applications. The focus of NDM is on the study of proficient human decision making in circumstances that involve high stress, and high-risk, uncertainty, and information overload. A State-of-the-Art Report will be produced from contributions by a select group of leading researchers in the ergonomic and decision sciences. Special emphasis will be placed on orienting our nation s resources in the field of cognitive systems engineering to address the challenges expressed by the Human Systems Priority Steering Council. Funding is provided for the joint services meeting on Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) research and applications to Emerging Defense Challenges. A select group of the world s leaders in the area of NDM will be tasked with generating material that integrates the findings and theories of NDM research, with a focus on military applications and accomplishments. Contributors will be tasked with extending existing methodologies and theories so that these apply to current and emergent challenges that confront the Department of Defense in its human-system integration programs. The integration of the contributions will commence in a Working Meeting to be held in Pensacola FL in FY 2015. It will be hosted by the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition. Planning and guidance for the activity will be conducted in close consultation with program officers across the DoD whose programs would likely benefit from the State-of-the-Art Report.
