Applied & Environmental Microbiology: Microbes that Influence, Sustain & Protect our Planet

Abstract

The Gordon Research Conferences (GRC) are requesting $12,000 from ONR to provide assistance with registration costs for 24 young faculty, postdocs and graduate students ($600 x 24 =$12,000) to attend the Applied & Environmental Microbiology GRC and the accompanying Graduate Research Seminar (GRS-AEM). The goal of this request is to support young scientists from a diverse range of backgrounds and nationalities in the early stages of their careers in order for them to be able to attend the GRC and the GRS on Applied and Environmental Microbiology. The nine session topics: Synthetic microbiology,Microbial cycling of nitrogen and sulfur, New approaches in biocatalysis and biodegradation, Microbial symbioses, Electrobiology, Marine biogeochemical cycles, Microbes and humans: interactions and interventions, Emerging techniques in microbial ecology and Biogeochemical cycles in the terrestrial and freshwater environment reflect exciting new developments the field and will ensure that talks, poster presentations, and discussions at the GRC will be innovative and world leading. The conference addresses several topical areas of relevance to ONR 342 including Gut Microbiology, Synthetic Biology, Microbial Fuel Cells, Metabolic Engineering, Marine Biofouling, Marine Microbiology. The GRS-AEM associated with the GRC-AEM entitled Solving Important Microbiological Questions in the "Omics” Era will be exclusively for PhD students and postdocs. The organizers are keen to support young scientists from developing countries and funding will be used in this regard as well. ONR funds will not be used for food, beverages or entertainment.
