Naval STEM Program at Cal. State LA

Abstract

?The proposal outlines a plan to develop a proram that will provide a pipeline of high quality STEM graduates who enter the Navy s Southern California Systems Commands (SYSCOMs) workforce equipped with relevant naval knowledge and skills. The program will focus on providing underrepresented minority students at California State University, LA access without barriers to STEM education opportunities and a pathway to careers in Naval STEM. The SYSCOMs will benefit by improving the quality, quantity, and diversification of its future STEM workforce in order to sustain its technological superiority across its missions. The premise of the program is that repeated exposure to and engagement in organized naval relevant activities through a student s undergraduate education (freshman through senior year) will inspire them to pursue careers with the Navy SYSCOMs upon graduation. The integrated activities, planned in collaboration with the local SYSCOMS, include outreach, coursework, competitions, internships, and senior design projects.
