From Stern to STEM: A Pilot Program for the Recruitment and Education of Navy Veterans

Abstract

Proposed is a pilot/proof of concept program to advance STEM education and outreach toveterans, improving the next generation of the Navy~s STEM workforce. Old DominionUniversity (ODU) is uniquely positioned to achieve these aims. It is strategically locatedin the Hampton Roads region of Virginia ~ home of the largest naval base in the world ~and has one of the largest concentrations of DoD contractors in the US. The region boaststhe only site in the US for aircraft carrier building, repair and maintenance, one of the twosites for the construction of submarines and one of four public shipyards ODU maintainsclose partnerships with the US Navy (and all other branches of the military), themaritime, shipbuilding and repair industries, many serving as members on ODU~sinstitutional advisory boards.
