Enhancing the STEM Workforce Through Hydrographic Science Education

Abstract

The University of Southern Mississippi Department of Marine Science proposes to establish a hydrographic science program at the undergraduate level that meets international standards for hydropgraphic surveyors by the International Organization and the International Marine Contractor Association. There is no such program in North America. Upon graduation from this proposed program, graduates will have attained knowledge and skills in geo-positioning using GNSS and USB technology, in acquiring bathymetric data using multi-beam acoustic technology, and in the operational use of other oceanographic sensors. The knowledge and skills obtained are applicable in all aspects of the Navy s missions and responsibilities in the ocean environment.
