Summer Bridge and Mentoring Program at UMASS Lowell

Abstract

The Francis College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) is growing significantly, having nearly doubled its undergraduate population in the past five years to 2400 students. As the leading public engineering institution in the Boston area and one of the largest in the Northeast, an opportunity exists to increase the technical talent pipeline for the region, especially with a focus on underrepresented groups. The current success of this student population, measured in terms of retention and graduation rates, severely lags behindoverall College averages. We aim to increase the likelihood of success of our students through the proposed summer bridge program and an associated student tracking and mentorship program. Furthermore, through a partnership with the Navy and Naval-related entities, we willcultivate a technical talent pipeline.
