MACBots: Building Physical HRI MODELS and Generating Semi-Autonomous ACTIONS for Team COOPERATION Using the Valkyrie Humanoid Robot: A Step Towards Firefighting Robots

Abstract

We propose to work with NASA-JSC and the NRL to perform extensive studies on physical human-robot interaction (pHRI) and cloud-based supervisory control, and augmenting these capabilities with state-of-the-art work in human modeling, skill learning, and cognitive architectures by NRL and others. These studies will be done by UT Austin using the Unit B of Valkyrie humanoid robot and use it at NRL for field studies. We seek to advance our compliant control middleware (ControlIt!) to provide advanced pHRI. We also plan to advance our cloudbased advanced robotics laboratory software (CARL) to enable the programming, teaching and retrieval of skills and the distributed collaboration of Valkyrie for shipboard firefighting.
