Educational Initiative program for graduate scholarships in the field of high-power RF technology
Abstract
The Directed Energy Professional Society (DEPS) offers this proposal to the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to enhance their existing Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) efforts. DEPS is a non-profit professional society composed of scientists and engineers, the vast majority of whose technical interests lay in directed energy (DE) areas. DEPS has supported the High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office s "Educational Initative Program" the past ten years, as the primary executor of their Basic Research grant. A new grant was awarded on 12 August 2014, #W911NF-14-1-0524, through the Army Research Office. DEPS is not an institution of higer learning and does not award graduate or undergraduate degrees, nor does DEPS hire graduates to work in HEL fields. Therefore, it is not possible for the proposed work to be self-serving. DEPS leverages its membership to achieve its educational goals. The DEPS Board of Scientific and Engineering Advisors, a subset of the DEPS Fellows, evaluates candidates for the graduate scholarships. DEPS members volunteer to serve as techincal referees for Journal articles, to review book manuscripts for technical accuracy, and to serve on conference program committees. These activities support the proposed effort without additional cost. Influencing the choice of research topics is a strong way to recruit graducate students as members of the DE workforce. New Ph.D. graduates with research experience in DE areas form a ready supply of highly trained entry level workers. This specific proposal will target graduate students studying in the high power RF technology area, and will cover tuition costs. In the past five years, DEPS has awarded 38 scholarships to graduate students pursing PhD. degrees in science and engineering. A requirement for up to $10,000 in awards is a student research topic in a directed energy area, and it is primarily intended for students who are early in their graduate school careers. The awardees are chosen by the Board of Scientific and Engineering Advisors. The criteria are academic promise and pertinence of the proposed research to Directed Energy. DEPS holds an annual Directed Energy Education Workshop, co-located with the Annual DE Symposium. The most recent of these Workshops drew 64 attendees. The agenda included presentations exclusively on education topics. Speakers included graduate DE scholars and representatives of other DE education programs. The workshop proceedings are published as part of the Symposium proceedings. This specific proposal will include presentations at the Education Workshop from the graduate workshop awards above, and will cover student s travel costs to the Education Workshop.
