HIgh Resolution Dynamics of Stratified Inlets

Abstract

The proposed research involves analysis of data obtained at the mouth of the Columbia River during the River Mouths and Inlets DRI and the DARLA MURI. The research has two main objectives: 1) to quantify and elucidate the hydraulic conditions in the estuary and apply these findings to the interpretation of remotely sensed frontal features; and 2) to use the observations and analysis from RIVET II to inform the non-hydrostatic modeling of fronts and related coherent structures that occur in the mouth of the Columbia River. The first task will be performed in collaboration with David Honegger and Merick Haller at Oregon State University. The second task will be performed in conjunction with Tom Hsu and his colleagues at the University of Delaware.
