Energy Absorption and Redistribution in Energetic Crystals: Implications for Spectroscopic Detection and Initiation of Chemistry

Abstract

We propose to perform theoretical studies of continuous-wave and multi-photon absorption and subsequent relaxation over the THz to vis-UV range for thin films of PETN and RDX crystals, with and without chemisorbed chromophores and with or without adsorbed solvent or plasticizer. We will determine whether localized energy absorption and short-time relaxation dynamics can lead to sufficient energy pooling near the surface to enhance vapor pressure, thermal signal, or induce chemistry.
