Behavioural Response Research Evaluation Workshop

Abstract

The behavioral response of marine mammals to Navy sonar exposure has been a research area funded by the US Navy for a decade or more. It is now proposed to hold a workshop to review and assess the current state of knowledge on this subject, specifically in relation to controlled exposure experiments (captive and free-ranging animals) and observational studies. The workshop will consist of a small number of selected participants who can contribute their expertise on the state of research, and three external reviewers who will help evaluate research efforts and identify strengths and weaknesses of current approaches. The outcome of the workshop and review process will be a report and a manuscript. These outputs will help evaluate the return on investment of current US Navy funded programs, identify the data needs and the contributions of current research programs to meeting data needs, and the ability to meet outstanding data needs given the current state of technology.
