Molten Salt Research

Abstract

Project Abstract Molten Salt Energy Storage (MSES) provides an inexpensive method to store heat generated from concentrating solar power facilities and other sources of thermal energy. This research will seek to expand the temperature range of MSES to 700°C resulting in lower costs and increased energy storage with the same mass of molten salt. Containment systems, receiver design, and corrosion of steels and coated pipes and vessels at elevated temperatures will be studied, along with techniques to reduce salt decomposition at high temperatures.
