NEPTUNE Center for Power and Energy Research- Purdue
Abstract
Technical Proposal for ONR BAA15-001 Title: NEPTUNE Center for Power and Energy Research Co-Investigators: Maureen C McCann, PhD J. Eric Dietz, PhD, PE Clifford Wojtalewicz Pankaj Sharma Abstract The Office of Naval Research has identified Power and Energy as one of nine strategic focus areas for the future fleet, as Naval forces’ freedom of action is delivered through energy security and efficient power systems. Afloat and on-shore needs comprise distributed power generation and storage systems, portable energy storage, and alternative fuel availability and performance. In addition to meeting the operational needs of the war-fighter, cutting-edge research also addresses the Navy’s focus on STEM education to ensure its future technological superiority. The NEPTUNE Center for Power and Energy Research aims to deliver new domain experts with the following characteristics: deep knowledge base in an energy-related discipline; ability to work in an interdisciplinary “team science” environment; mirroring societal diversity; with prior exposure to Navy culture. Navy personnel, ROTC students and veterans will be engaged to participate in one of seven energy-related research projects supporting a total of 13 graduate students, one post-doctoral, and 12 undergraduate students. The NEPTUNE cohort of early career scientists will also engage in activities that showcase the NEPTUNE program and deepen Navy-Purdue linkages.
