Development of an Acoustic Data Acquisition System to enable Very-High Frequency Ocean Acoustic and High-Data-Rate Acoustic Communications Research from Moored or Mobile Autonomous Platforms

Abstract

?The PI will develop a low-power, broadband acoustic transmitter and receiver system equipped with acoustic arrays and capable of unattended operation on both moored and mobile platforms. Such a system is critical to achieving the scientific goals of ONR related research in the Very High Frequency (VHF) regime (order 100 kHzto 1 MHz)including:the development of Navy relevant short range, high-data-rate acoustic communications systems, the study of small-scale water-column and upper-boundary-layer processes, and their impact on VHF acoustic propagation. The proposed system leverages recent technical developments to achieve system capabilities, form factors, and power requirements not possible 10 years ago.
