Rotorcraft enabled UAV maneuverability to reliably operate and maintain pose in more challenging environments.
Abstract
Short Work StatementTo conduct research into the potential benefits of autonomous unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) operating collaboratively in close proximity, larger and more robust platforms than are currently being used are required.ObjectiveThe proposed DURIP will purchase a system consisting of two SA-200 Weasel UAVs and a ground control station. The vehicles will be used to expound on advancing UAV collaborative autonomy research for aircraft flying in tight formation and under operationally challenging conditions. The research will address not only collaborative autonomy, but also issues associated with UAV flight control in adverse weather while in close proximity to one another.ApproachThe autonomous unmanned air vehicles must operate reliably and maintain pose in more extreme environments, e.g., over the open ocean and in 30+ knot winds, while not incurring the high price-tag and more difficult launch and recovery procedures associated with larger UAVs such as the FireScout. To meet this need the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) proposes to purchase a system consisting of two SA-200 Weasel UAVs and a ground control station.Overall Merit and ONR Mission RelevanceThis effort addresses the ONR Strategic Plan under the Naval S&T Focus Area of Electromagnetic Maneuver Warfare and the Objective Category of Electronic Warfare. It addresses ONR s stated goal of enabling the warfighter to have complete control of the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) to ensure that naval forces can utilize it as required, deny the adversary the ability to use the spectrum except as we allow it, and assure that our sensors and electronic attack systems operate across the full span of the EMS.
