EK 80 Sonar Transceivers for Argos 27

Abstract

?The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) has proposed the acquisition, installation, and operation of a Kongsberg EK 80 SONAR system for the Oceans Class research vessel Neil Armstrong (AGOR 27). The yet to be completed vessel will be owned by the U.S. Navy and operated by WHOI under a Charter Party Agreement in cooperation with the Office of Naval Research (ONR). The Kongsberg Underwater Technologies Inc. (KUTI) EK 80 SONAR will provide the capability of a sophisticated, state-of-the-art echo-sounder that will allow science users access to detailed mid-water echo sounding data that can be used by a wide variety of disciplines including fisheries management, marine mammal observers, physical oceanographers, and others. This request is to propose the addition of two additional acoustic transceivers to complete the current array previously purchased, but not yet installed, and to request funds to install and integrate the existing KUTI acoustic systems aboard R/V Armstrong.
