Working Towards Interferometric Imaging of Satellites with the Next Generation Science Camera for the Navy Precision Optical Interferometer

Abstract

The Visible Imaging System for Interferometric Observations at NPOI (VISION) is a powerful new camera for reconstructing images with spatial resolution 200× the very best images made by the Hubble Space Telescope. This allows us to achieve < 1 m resolutions on geostationary satellites, orbiting at 37,000 km. VISION makes NPOI currently the world’s only visible light interferometer that can take full advantage of combining light from 6 tele-scopes simultaneously. This high resolution imaging device is a powerful tool for developing technologies to address the unmet needs of imaging deep space objects and achieving deep space situational awareness.
