A population consequence of acoustic disturbance model for Cuvier s beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) in southern California: Photo-id and tag data components

Abstract

A Population Consequence of Acoustic Disturbance Model for CuvierÕs beaked whale (Ziphius cavirostris) in Southern California: Photo-ID and Tag Data Components This document represents one element of a larger collaborative proposal to support the extension of the BlainvilleÕs beaked whale (Mesoplodon densirostris) Population Consequences of Acoustic Disturbance (PCAD) model to CuvierÕs beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) in the Southern California Bight. While this effort includes no fieldwork, it will consolidate and build on existing data sets, and provide a framework that will inform future data collection. This proposal represents the visual survey-derived data components that are required for this process, including sighting and group composition rates, population structure and individual life history parameters derived from photo-identification, and diving and movement behavior from satellite tags. It should be considered in tandem with a more comprehensive proposal submitted by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), Newport, RI with David Moretti as the principle investigator, which will serve as the central coordinating body for the proposed work and also the passive acoustic data lead, and with a proposal from the University of St. Andrews for statistical modeling.
