Enabling the Next Generation Magnetron with Diffraction Output and Other High Power Microwave Sources

Abstract

The goal of this DURIP proposal is to enhance the instrumentation capability of the University of New Mexicoƕs Pulsed Power, Beams, and Microwaves Laboratory. This will enable us to further optimize the microwave extraction scheme from the magnetron with diffraction output (MDO). This then positions us to contribute to basic research for future Navy needs in high power RF. We will experimentally test the possibility of replacing the electromagnet system required for magnetron operation with a permanent magnet. Success in this area would not only reduce the total system weight by at least 400 lbs, but also increase the total system efficiency. Furthermore, we would like to experimentally verify the generation of high power microwaves using a novel metamaterial slow wave structure that has shown 3 fold reduction in size compared to traditional sources.
