UW Ship Operations, Maintenance, Repair and Upgrades 2016-2020

Abstract

opportunities onboard Research Vessels Thomas G Thompson and Clifford A Barnes. R/V Thomas G. Thompson is owned by the U.S. Navy and is operated by the University of Washington under a charter party agreement. R/V Clifford A Barnes is owned by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is operated by University of Washington under a cooperative agreement. Both vessels support oceanographic research conducted by numerous scientists as vessels within the University National Oceanographic Laboratory Systems (UNOLS) fleet. This includes research sponsored by the Office of Naval Research as well as other important entities such as NSF, NASA, NOAA, USGS, the University of Washington, and the University of Victoria. In this proposal the University of Washington (UW) proposes to continue conducting research vessel operations to directly support oceanographic research that is sponsored by the U.S. Navy. The proposal requests funding for Navy-sponsored science operations that may be anticipated for 2016 and it further anticipates additional opportunities for UW to conduct oceanographic cruises on either R/V Thompson or R/V Barnes in future years as the Navy sponsors additional research that is best conducted on either vessel. UW further requests support as necessary to maintain, repair and upgrade R/V Thompson so as to reliably and efficiently conduct oceanographic research.
