Multidimensional Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry for Aviation Fuels

Abstract

The US Navy leadership has pronounced a fascinating vision to drive implementation of biofuels and other alternative energy resources while increasing the fuel efficiency of conventional applications. While the use of fossil fuels has enabled the economic prosperity for many nations, singular dependence upon them has given rise to systemic vulnerabilities in climate, energy, economic, and national security. Our Nation is in need of solution that will provide domestic energy independence. In achieving its vision, the Navy could demonstrate to the Nation that a green footprint is both a public good and a cost-effective strategy. Purdue University is ready to engage exceptional skills and expertise to overcome the critical technical roadblocks in achieving the domestic energy independence goal that will certainly reinforce our Nation’s excellent defense strategy. Our commitment to the Navy is further strengthened by the Statement of Cooperation signed between the parties in May, 2014 (as attached). One essential scientific instrument that will enhance the significant research capabilities in alternative fuels while delivering research-related education to future innovators in alternative energy is a multidimensional gas chromatograph with mass spectrometry detection. Purdue researchers are proposing to add this state-of-the-art instrument to their analytical portfolio with the goals of accurately investigating the chemical compositional characteristics of both conventional and alternative fuels. This knowledge base will further be utilized to correlate fuel properties to performance characteristics. Multidimensional gas chromatography, coupled with mass spectrometry, is powerful technology that carries great potential to bring solutions to both the tactical and strategic challenges to our Nation’s energy independence.
