Building a virtual model of a baleen whale: Phase 3

Abstract

We propose to construct audiograms and head-related transfer functions (directional hearing maps) for a fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) and a minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata). This will include a study of skull kinesiology during reception of very longwavelength sounds in order to ferret out the essence of the bone-conduction mechanisms in mysticetes. This work will inform Navy compliance standards by providing estimates of hearing sensitivity and directional hearing in selected mysticetes that may be exposed to Navy sonar.
