Bio-inspired Soft Body Structure AUVs with Lateral/Epidermal Sensory Systems

Abstract

The goal of this proposed research project is to implement bio-inspired techniques on underwater robots. During this process the PI and team will design and construct entirely soft underwater robots for demonstration, in addition to implementing sensing and soft propulsors on traditional rigid vehicles. The soft robots without any rigid structures will be designed in multiple configurations employing both flapping and jetting propulsive mechanisms. They will simultaneously identify the benefits of flexibility, take advantage of tissue structures which maintain required geometry, and implement sensory feedback that guarantees the benefits of flexibility are being utilized fully.
