Understanding Molecular and Crystalline Mechanisms that Govern Insensitivity in Shocked Energetic Crystals

Abstract

The focus of the proposed research is on a fundamental understanding of the intrinsic properties of energetic crystals (molecular and crystalline attributes/mechanisms) that govern the insensitivity of these crystals at conditions relevant to shock wave induced chemical decomposition. Some aspects of this effort are also relevant to thermal loading. Well characterized shock wave and static compression experiments will be conducted on insensitive energetic single crystals and the desired measurements obtained to gain insight into the molecular and crystalline mechanisms.
