Materials Approach to Dissecting Surface Responses in the Attachment Stages of Biofouling Organisms

Abstract

The settlement of five fouling organisms on xerogel coatings formulated to have a range of surface energies, dispersive components to surface energies, zeta potentials, and charge will be evaluated in laboratory and field tests. Surface topography will be examined in coatings containing carboxylic acid components. The settlement responses will be analyzed using principal component analysis. The settlement responses will be incorporated in the design of new antifouling/fouling release coatings.
