Mechanisms of Aeration for Biofouling Prevention

Abstract

In this proposed basic research effort, we will perform field tests and macro and micro scale laboratory experiments to evaluate several hypotheses about the mechanisms of aerationbased biofouling prevention. By integrating our findings with work ongoing in the Office of Naval Research (ONR) Navy Undersea Research Program as well as ONR s Biofouling program, we will relate actual macro scale fouling to physical conditions and organism settling mechanisms when bubbles are present. The collaboration between the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport and Boston University (BU) allows us to exploit facilities and expertise of each organization; we also look forward to having a BU graduate student spend significant time at NUWC.
