THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF N00014-14-1-0714 Mathematical Theory for the Discovery of Multifunctional Nanomaterials

Abstract

Abstract. This proposal initiates a program of research on the discovery of new nanostructures based on the concept of Objective Structures (OS). This concept of atomic structure includes ordinary crystals (Bravais as well as complex lattices), and also the main structures of nanotechnology, including carbon nanotubes of any chirality, buckyballs, graphene sheets, the building blocks of most viruses, many of the basic protein molecules, as well as the nanosprings, nanorods and nanoribbons that are mainstays of nanotechnology. The main tasks of the research are 1) the development of quantum mechanical methods for the analysis of the electronic structure of objective structures and the use of these methods to discover new nanostructures, and 2) the investigation of phase transformations in objective structures.
