Molecular Mechanisms of Microbial Uptake of Extracellular Electrons

Abstract

The proposed research will investigate the molecular mechanism(s)of cathodic uptake of electrons into microorganisms. This proposal is based on two important, very recent discoveries that we made and resulted, for the first time, in the identification of a specific mechanism of cathodic electron uptake into microbial cells. Based on these findings, two distinct pathways of microbial electron uptake will be elucidated on a detailed molecular level: Enzyme-facilitated electron uptake in Methanococcus maripaludis and whole cell electron uptake in non-methanogenic anaerobic bacteria. The approaches includes genomic, biochemical, genetic and synthetic biology studies.
