Resolving Time Scales of Removal of Suspended Sediment with a Geostationary Ocean Color Satellite

Abstract

Tidal currents introduce sediment (SPM) into suspension. Elevated Suspended sediment concentrations negatively affect optical clarity. Processes that reduce elevated SPR are not fully understood. We propose to use geostationary satellite (GOCI) which provides 1hr ocean color images to address the rate of SPM removal over short time scales and large spatial scales. Field work to calibrated and validate the approach will take part with a joint NASA/KIOST campaign in spring 2016. With NRL scientists we will improve mode predictions of SPM evolution.
