Intelligent Analysis of Big Social Media Data for Crisis Tracking

Abstract

ONR BAA Announcement # ONR BAA15-001 Program Officer: Dr. Rebecca Goolsby (341) Intelligent Analysis of Big Social Media Data for Crisis Tracking Huan Liu, Data Mining and Machine Learning Lab School of Computing, Informatics, and Decision Systems Engineering Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ Duration of Effort: January 1, 2016 – December 30, 2017; $200K for year 1 and $200K for year 2 with an option of $50K/year Summary The Data Mining and Machine Learning Lab at ASU has been spearheading the effort of building social media tools for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR), and for crisis tracking. Our software systems including ACT (ASU Coordination Tracker)1, BlogTrackers2, TweetTracker3, TweetXplorer, and CrisisTracker have been used by NGOs, universities, and organizations for training, teaching, and research purposes. These systems help first responders, relief organizers, and researchers to collect, curate, store data, and visualize data with preliminary data analysis capabilities, as well as assisting relief coordination. As the collective data collection capability has improved significantly, the pressing need for intelligent analysis arises to overcome problems associated with big social media data: information overload, misinformation, covert adversaries, false positives, and differential information discovery. Extending the successes of these software systems for blog and tweet tracking and information gathering, this proposed project aims to expand data analysis that can intelligently handle information overload and misinformation, and intelligently differentiate novel information among big social media data from information of known sources. In this project, we propose to study innovative research issues, and develop new social computing theories and algorithms. We aim to seamlessly integrate the existing and newly developed systems and make them easy-to-use tools for training, research experiments, and exercises for field deployment.
