THIS GRANT IS A CONTINUATION OF N00014-14-1-0663 Bulk Nanostructured Materials for Navy Applications-Makinen

Abstract

Polymer fibers with diameters of a few nanometers will be fabricated by an electro spinning process coupled with applied electric fields. Experiments will be carried out on previously investigated PAN fibers and extended to other systems such as Nylon 6,6, Nomex, and Vectra. The mechanical properties will be characterized and the dependence on molecular alignment and non-crystallinity determined. Fibers will be combined into high order structures such as yarns and cloths. The transfer of high fiber strength and ductility to these structures will be investigated and optimized. Dr. Antti Makinen is the Program Officer.
