X-RAY BASED DIAGNOSTICS FOR THE STUDY OF SHEET-TO-CLOUD TRANSITION

Abstract

Funds are provided to perform the following efforts: Examine the two-dimensional cavitating flow over a hydrofoil model. We will test the hypothesis that the cloud shedding occurs as a result of two mechanisms: (1) re-entrant flow, and (2) shock formation is being examined. Shedding on the cavitating wedge is dominated by shock formation. But, re-entrant flow may dominate the shedding on hydrofoils at shallow attack angles. We will examine partial cavitation a NACA 0015, whose cavitation patterns has been extensively characterized by previous researchers. We are using use x-ray based diagnostics to determine which shedding mechanisms dominate under specific flow conditions. We will also examine how gas injection can modify these dynamics.
