Expanding UCR s Interdisciplinary Materials Science and Engineering Faculty
Abstract
This project provides an enhanced startup package to be used by the Provost of UC Riverside to competitively recruit a new faculty member in interdisciplinary Materials Science and Engineering in the area of either phonon/magnon engineered materials/devices or in computational materials science. The approach taken to meet the objective is to provide research startup funding for one faculty hire in an accredited Hispanic Serving Institution. The focus of the research will be in one of two faculty cluster recruitments under way: (1) Computational materials (authorized to fill up to four junior positions in density functional theory for materials growth and structure, molecular dynamics for thermal and growth properties, and strongly correlated materials); (2) Phonon/magnon engineered materials and devices (authorized for up to five new junior or senior positions in spectroscopy, magnonic devices, device fabrication, device physics, and thermoelectric devices). The funds will be used by the new faculty member for equipment, supplies, summer salary, graduate and undergraduate research assistant support, travel to technical meetings and other such needs to begin their career in the area of materials science and engineering. The objective of this program is to support infrastructure at historically black colleges and universities and minority institutions as mandated by the federal government.
