Connecting STEM Outreach Now Using VIE Education for Youth (CONVEY)
Abstract
Connecting STEM Outreach Now Using VIE Education for Youth (CONVEY) In an effort to support the Wounded Warrior Project’s mission of honoring and empowering wounded warriors, this proposal details a project—Connecting STEM Outreach Now Using VIE Education for Youth (CONVEY)—to help the children of wounded service men and women gain a deeper understanding of their loved one’s healing process and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) related topics through the use of a Virtual Integration Environment (VIE) system. The VIE was developed as a training platform to help amputees adapt quickly to operating the Modular Prosthetic Limb (MPL) developed for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Revolutionizing Prosthetics Program. The primary objective of the project is to increase the exposure of 2nd–12th grade children of wounded warriors to STEM topics related to advanced prosthetics in a fun and interactive way. Further objectives are to enhance each child’s understanding of how STEM concepts and products are being used to enable personal independence, mobility, and human interaction. This project is anticipated to cultivate an emotional connection that is unique to these children that may motivate them to pursue STEM careers. The project aims to build a foundation of knowledge for students, including fundamentals of musculoskeletal anatomy and physiology, electromyography (EMG) signal acquisition and processing, virtual environment development and implementation—and, for higher-level students, an overview of the neuroscience that is being applied to control the prosthetics. This project is intended to reach children in elementary, middle, and high school who may have wounded warrior parents or relatives to help them understand prosthetics technologies and stimulate their interest in STEM.
