THIS GRANT IS A CONTINUATION OF NAVRIS #1108624 Modeling Human Performance in STAMPS
Abstract
This S&T effort focuses on estimating and modeling human variability in STAMPS in a manner that validly and efficiently accounts for the impact of potentially many confounders, i.e. performance modifiers. The estimated time distributions should account for natural human variability and assure that STAMPS event meets a Critical Response. This S&T research aims to further expand the boundaries to better characterize in ship design. Navy operators show significant variability in performance when operating combat systems in both training and fleet operations. The cause of this variability is unknown. Solutions may include technology improvements, training, or changing who operates the system. Acquisition and training communities can identify targeted solutions to improve total system performance by quantifying Total System Error as System Error, Operator Error and a Random Error. The UCF research team will focus on the following aspects of human performance:Support Modeling Human Performance In Stamps- Assessment of Task Completion Times- Shipboard Task Categorization- The Effect of Confounders- The Impact of Human Error on Task CompletionDevelopment and Modeling The Ideal Human Performer/ObserverAn internationally recognized team of experts from the University of Central Florida (UCF) - Department of Industrial Engineering & Management Systems (IEMS) and the Institute for Advanced Systems Engineering (IASE) has been assembled to perform this research. The principal investigator, Dr. Waldemar Karwowski, will be assisted by Kevin Muhs (PhD Candidate), Dr. Tareq Ahram (IASE Lead HF/HSI Researcher) and Dr. Petros Xanthopoulos (Assistant Professor). No subcontractors will be used. University of Central Florida, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management Systems will provide all needed physical resources and computing hardware and software that may be needed for this project. The Office of Research and Commercialization serves UCF scholars as the official liaison between UCF and government and commercial sectors and by providing a helping hand for faculty as they work their way through the funding and contract management process. The Office helps establish connections with the agencies and individuals who invest in the promise of research and creative activities.
