Predicting Failure Mechanisms of Adhesively Bonded Thick Metallic and Composite Adherends

Abstract

Reliable implementation of bonded composite patch repairs requires predicting failuremechanisms of adhesively bonded composite to thick metallic adherends. The proposed workhas two research objectives: (1) Identify failure mechanisms the composite patch, and (2) solvethe governing differential equation for the composite patch. Two key benefits to the Navy thatare: (1) Fundamental Understanding of Failure Mechanisms of Over Laminated ThickAluminum to Thin Composite Joints, and (2) Numerical Solution Approach for Thick Aluminumto Thin Composite Joint Ultimate Capacity.
