Reconfigurable Metamaterials for Beam Steering, Imaging and Sensing at Infrared Frequencies

Abstract

The PI will work in two related thrust areas: 1) electrically-reconfigurable metasurfaces and 2) magnetically-reconfigurable metamaterials. Thrust 1 will demonstrate tunable metasurfaces to steer IR light based on graphene nanoribbons, develop graphene metasurfaces for biochemical sensing applications, and create electrically-tunable metasurfaces using 2D patterns in graphene. Thrust 2 will design and model infrared metamolecules based on advances electromagnetic solvers, self-assemble gold-coated microparticles to form chains, rings, flowers, etc., and characterize the distinct optical response of the reconfigurable metamaterials.
