THE INFLUENCE OF TRANSVERSE SHEAR LOADING ON FACE/CORE DEBONDING AND CRACK KINKING IN FOAM CORE SANDWICH STRUCTURE

Abstract

This proposal outlines research on an important failure mode of sandwich structures, viz. face/core debonding and the associated crack deflection (kinking) into the core. Specifically, the influences of transverse shear loading on the driving force (energy release rate) and mode mixity are targeted. Analysis will utilize finite element numerical and analytical methods. Test methods will be developed where the amount of shear loading can be controlled. Experimental tests will be conducted on sandwich specimens with various density foam cores to verify analysis and provide a database on debond toughness under a variety of loadings.
