Placekeeping Ability as a Cognitive Control Construct: Validity and Malleability
Abstract
The goal of the proposed research is to investigate the validity and malleability of placekeeping ability. We propose two tracks of research, to be conducted in parallel. The first track is designedto further validate and refine a test of placekeeping ability (UNRAVEL), focusing on work-relevant outcomes. Evidence from this study that measures of placekeeping ability from UNRAVEL improve prediction of work-relevant outcomes would identify a new factor for consideration in personnel selection and classification in military contexts. Evidence that controlling for sources of strategic variability in UNRAVEL improves its predictive validity for work-relevant outcomes would suggest a possible way of improving the validity not only of UNRAVEL, but of cognitive ability tests, in general. The second study is designed to investigate the malleability of placekeeping ability. Evidence that UNRAVEL training transfers to work-relevant outcomes would identify a possible approach to augmenting training of military tasks that involve executing sequential procedures.
