2016 Microbial Stress Response GRC/GRS
Abstract
The Microbial Stress Response Gordon Research Conference (GRC)/Gordon Research Symposium (GRS) will be held 7/16/16-7/22/16 in Mount Holyoke, MA. This conference is unique in focusing on microbial stress responses. These reactions are critical for microbial survival and niche exploitation. This Gordon Conference uniquely serves researchers in this area, assembling scientists who study a diverse array of organisms and who utilize a variety of approaches to study stress responses. The conference covers microbes from a variety of environments, the establishment of beneficial microbe-host interactions in animals, plants or humans, as well as the negative interactions of microbes as animal and agricultural pathogens. The meeting includes sessions presenting the most recent results derived from genetic, molecular and computational approaches to analyze stress responses in isolated microbes and microbial communities. The new and unpublished results discussed at this meeting will help the scientific community better understand how stress responses contribute to controlling beneficial and pathogenic microbial interactions to improve human health and to increase the effectiveness of microbial processes that benefit our environment and resource allocations. This conference is directly relevant to the ONR mission to provide science and technology based solutions for current and future naval challenges: microbial communities contribute to biofouling of ships, can power low-voltage autonomous devices in remote locales (including being deployed in sediments in the worlds oceans), and contribute to infections of naval personnel. Conference funding is being sought from ONR to provide partial support for registration fee and/or travel support for post docs, graduate students and early-career scientists to attend the Microbial Stress Response Gordon Research Conference and Gordon Research Seminar. The budget has been kept to the minimum required to provide support of participants while still allowing for an excellent scientific conference. Travel support will be capped to $500 maximum for domestic travel and $700 maximum for international travel in order to encourage invited participants to seek the lowest airfares. All conferees are expected to attend the entire meeting(s) for which they are registered.
